6/18/23 - Jesus Speaks About Heaven - John 14:2-4; Matthew 19:23-30 - Pastor Jason Fritz

In John chapter 13 Jesus tells his followers about his departure. They are understandably upset. In response, Jesus makes a direct reference about heaven and comforts the disciples with these words…

“In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.” John 14:2-4

Now let me tell you why it's important to understand that heaven is a real place with a real location. If you are unaware that Jesus, upon his ascension went to prepare an unimaginably beautiful place for you, then there will be a longing in your heart for a place like this. As a result, you will begin to build that place on earth. You will spend every dime, every thought, every action into making this planet a heaven-like existence for yourself and it will be a super cheap knock-off filled with disappointment.

I think it’s significant that the two words Jesus used most often to describe heaven are eternal life. Heaven is filled with life as God intended it to be and without end. The thought occurred to me this week and I think it’s safe to compare and contrast eternal life in heaven with what we experience as temporal life on earth. Temporal life is filled with heartache and struggle and pain and death and disease and chaos and uncertainty and suffering and it’s all a result of human sin. Who wants to live eternally with these things? The old must be made new. Eternal life in heaven with a recreated earth will be free from all our current struggles.

If you conclude that Jesus’ teachings about heaven and hell offer the most reliable information about the destinations that await us when we die then you must embrace the reality of how each is entered. The only way you can be welcomed into heaven is by receiving God’s offer of forgiveness on this side of the grave.
