747 Surveys Brooks Falls and Awaits the First Salmon - Explore.org

It is still a day or two before the first big escapement of salmon to enter Naknek River will make it to Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park, Alaska. 747, the largest and one of the most dominant brown bears to frequent Brooks Falls, surveys the river in anticipation of the salmon feast to come. When it becomes clear that the wait must continue, he heads back toward the woods, and snatches an unsatisfying mouthful of grass on the way.

In the spring and early summer, brown bears at Katmai graze on grasses and protein-rich Lyngbye's sedge (a grass-like plant), along with other vegetation and foraged foods, while waiting for the abundant calorie-rich salmon that usually begin to arrive at the end of June each year.
