Shooting A Short Documentary

In this video, I talk through the making of the mini documentary Boxed Up — which I directed and shot as part of a local film challenge.

I’ll walk you through the production process, including:
• How I filmed the main interview with Glen in a small home studio
• Lighting and sound setup in a small space
• Choosing props, outfits, and little details that helped tell the story
• Capturing candid, natural moments for a more authentic documentary feel

This was filmed over just a day and a half on a low budget, using only the gear I already owned so if you’re into indie filmmaking, cinematography, or documentary storytelling, I hope this breakdown gives you some useful ideas and inspiration.

Next episode, I’ll cover the post-production side editing, colour grading, and how we brought the final film together.

🎬 Boxed Up is a personal short documentary about memory, family, and the quiet power of objects that we keep.

It was shortlisted at this year’s Folkestone Documentary Festival.
