Aircraft Community Noise Simulation | Now You Know Series

Meet SIMULIA Aerospace & Defense, Industry Process Senior Specialist, Benedikt Koenig, who lives near a major airport and is grateful as there are far fewer flights leaving and arriving due to recent pandemic restrictions. Fewer planes in transit has resulted less aircraft community noise, allowing for a more peaceful atmosphere at his home where he is currently working as well.

Benedikt notes that there were several hundred aircraft community noise complaints everyday around the London Heathrow airport before the Pandemic restricted travel and vacations plans. There are efforts being put forth to subdue the resounding discomfort. In fact, Engine manufacturers have known of this issue for some time and, by today's standards, engines are no longer the loudest noise source on an aircraft.

Benedikt notes that the we have to examine the airframe to define areas for improvement. Sound is generally quiet throughout the flight, however, when landing gear or wing flaps are deployed, airflow causes these aspects of the plane become major noise sources.
