Definitions from Merriam-Webster Online:
Neurodiversity: a) Individual differences in brain functioning regarded as normal variations within the human population. b) The concept that differences in brain functioning within the human population are normal and that brain functioning that is not neurotypical should not be stigmatized. c) The inclusion of a group, organization, etc. of people with different types of brain functioning.

What do we mean by "supports"? A "support" (in this context) means any tool, technique, or strategy that provides structure and/or assistance . For example, visual supports are helpful for many people. These supports include schedules, checklists, cartoons, and social narratives/stories. Sensory supports can help people to maintain or restore self-regulation. These supports can include weighted blankets, squishy toys, sunglasses, or breaks (reach out to an occupational therapist for more information on sensory supports). Communication supports can include a picture exchange communication system (PECS), scripts, and adaptive technology (reach out to a speech language pathologist for more information on communication supports). There are so many different types and forms of supports out there! To learn more, please contact the autism project at theautismproject@lifespan.org.
