So Peri-implantitis is a condition which causes swelling and infection around the dental implants. This can drastically reduce the life of your dental implant. Now what are the causes of peri-implantitis? First of all is the poor oral hygiene the way when you do improper brushing or flossing and it can affect the life of your natural teeth. It can also affect the life of your implants. If you do not floss or brush well there will be bacterial or plaque accumulation around the implants which can cause infection, swelling and loosening of the implants. Second is smoking. Smoking can reduce the diameter of your blood vessels and hence the blood flow near the implants. This reduces the body's capability to heal and to reduce the infection. When it happens so ideally you should reduce or stop smoking when you've placed your implants. Third is medical condition like diabetes mellitus again with diabetes mellitus your ability to heal the infection reduces as the blood flow to the area is compromised. Next is a compromised bone or a surgical technique if the implant is placed with a poor surgical technique in a bone which is compromised or in a compromised angulation or position. Then unnecessary loads can fall on your implant and it can lead to a problem and hence your peri-implantitis. The next condition sometimes is genetics that is something which nobody can assume and nobody can predict. But yes if you are predisposed to periodontal problems or it is in your family then yes Peri – implantitis can happen for you. Now what are the warning signs for Peri implantitis? The most common sign to Peri – implantitis. is by swelling around the implants, redness, tender, irritation while eating and pain. Now ideally you should report to a doctor the moment these problems arise so that your surgeon can take care and look into what is the problem. If you ignore this problem then it can eventually lead to loosening of the implant and finally failure. Now there are ways where we can stop and control this. If you report to your dentist or your surgeon when the problems start which could be just tenderness while eating irritation bleeding on brushing then your surgeon can start with some non-surgical ways. They will start with cleaning that area, giving you a dose of antibiotics and painkillers to reduce infection. Sometimes even surgical approaches are needed in surgical approaches. We open the area, debride or clean the area very well so that all the accumulation of bacteria and the tissues which are not good can be removed. Sometimes even a bone graft is placed. A bone graft is like an artificial structure which will enable faster bone healing and hence will add more strength to your implant. So with these methods your implantologist or your surgeon can help control Peri – implantitis. With Peri – implantitis. prevention is the key. So search for a good implantologist. A good surgeon who can put the implant in the right way advise you what is the right post care and ensure that in case where Peri – implantitis. does happen it is treated in such a way so that you don't lose your implant.
