Do I Qualify for a BVI Bareboat Charter? Sailing Resume Explained
Do you qualify for a bareboat charter? Before a yacht charter company hands over a boat, they are going to want to see your sailing resume.
In this video, we explain what charter companies look for when deciding whether someone is qualified to charter a sailboat or catamaran. It is not just about having taken a course or holding a certificate. Charter companies want to see a real record of your knowledge, skills, and experience — especially your experience.
They will look at what size boats you have sailed, whether you have experience on a similar type of boat, whether you have sailed monohulls or catamarans, and whether you were crew or actually acting as master of the vessel. Being “on the boat” is not the same as being responsible for the boat.
We also explain why boat size matters. If you normally sail a 28-foot monohull, you may be considered for something around the 38-foot range, depending on your overall experience. But if you have only taken a boat out once or twice, that is probably not enough for a bareboat charter.
If you do not have enough experience yet, the better move is to go with an instructor or skipper first. That way, you can learn how chartering actually works, build real experience, and come back ready to charter on your own.
This video is for anyone planning a bareboat charter, BVI sailing vacation, catamaran charter, or first yacht charter.
