Tarique Plans Return to Bangladesh

Tarique Rahman, son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, announced he will return to Bangladesh to lead the BNP in February’s national election.

These will be the first elections since mass protests in 2024 that ousted Sheikh Hasina and her Awami League government after 15 years in power.

The UN estimates around 1,400 deaths occurred during the 2024 uprising and crackdown on student protests.

Hasina fled to India, where she now faces crimes against humanity charges in absentia.

The interim government, led by Nobel laureate Prof. Muhammad Yunus, has banned the Awami League from politics until trials conclude.
