The Manitou Stone Is Not Coming Home | Manitou Asinîy

Anybody else disappointed that the Manitou Stone is not coming home after all?

The historic 145-kilogram iron meteorite, which holds deep spiritual significance for Indigenous peoples, is believed to have come to rest as many as four billion years ago near Straw Stack Hill, close to present-day Hardisty.

On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in 2022, the Government of Alberta pledged to return the sacred rock to its original location “at or near Hardisty” within Flagstaff County, on Treaty 6 territory.

However, in a more recent federal news release, the Government of Canada announced that Parks Canada and the Manitou Asinîy-Iniskim-Tsa Xani Centre have signed a Letter of Intent to explore locations within Elk Island National Park for a future cultural centre to house Manitou Asinîy, also known as the Manitou Stone.

What are your thoughts on this unexplained change of plans?
