Rick Franzo's Minimally Invasive Brain Surgery with Gamma Knife Icon

Rick Franzo learned he had a brain tumor after a game of horseshoes.
His first tumor was removed by doctors who performed a craniotomy which left him paralyzed and involved a lengthy
rehabilitation. When a non-malignant tumor called an acoustic neuroma was discovered during a routine visit in the spring of 2017, neurosurgeons at Lehigh Valley Health Network explained Rick had the option of having non-invasive brain surgery using the Gamma Knife Icon. Icon is the newest Gamma Knife available. It allows most patients to experience Gamma Knife treatment by wearing a lightweight mask to restrict movement of the head instead of wearing a head frame, which was necessary with the older Gamma Knife unit, the Perfection. The hour long treatment had Rick home the same day and back to work after a few days of rest. In this video, he recounts his experience with Gamma Knife Icon treatment at LVHN and radiologist oncologist Allison McIntosh explains how Gamma Knife Icon works when treating brain tumors such as acoustic neuromas.
