Out Run 2006: Coast 2 Coast

There is a challenge/campaign mode in Out Run 2006: Coast 2 Coast in the form of custom races given to you either from the ladies who ride along with you or from the flagman who starts the races. The girls will give you specific minigame-like challenges to impress them, starting with easy ones such as driving a stage while staying in one specific lane and culminating with hard ones such as performing arithmetic and memory puzzles as you scream down the highway against the time limit. The flagman gives you more traditional racing challenges in the form of competing against opponents for first place in a race or demonstrating your slipstream or drift techniques.

The flagman's final two challenges are both races through 15 different stages, in reverse, against 99 other computer controlled drivers. The first one is against Out Run 2's 15 original tracks, while the second one is against Out Run 2: Special Tours' 15 unique tracks. 99 opponents is daunting, but definitely doable. The cars closest to first place sometimes like to break away from the rest of the pack though, so be careful and don't waste time since you'll likely need every stage!

The key to these long races is getting comfortable and finding your rhythm. I had a rough start in the first few stages as well as a hard crash about half way through that lost me a lot of time and let the lead cars widen the gap between them and me. Do not let yourself panic if you suffer a hard crash or find that the lead cars have broken away because you will just start to make more and more mistakes! Focus only on keeping your speed up and your lines clean and you'll find that first place will come quicker than you might expect.

One last place to improve your time is in the Out Run showroom, where you can spend the "miles" you've earned at the end of each race on faster Ferrari cars, new time trial stages, music, and more. Save those miles to purchase the souped up Out Run edition cars as they have a much higher top speed and acceleration when compared to the stock cars. While the prices are astronomical and will take dozens of races before you can even purchase just one, the benefits are very noticeable. I use the Out Run edition Testarossa for its well balanced handling, speed, and acceleration despite it looking a bit gaudy.
