The Art of War | How to Transform Trauma into Inspiration
This video is a slightly abridged version of what I presented at Minority Veterans of America's 2021 Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Summit.
Before becoming a social worker, I was an artist who found creating art as a way to navigate the world around me. I currently run workshops and educational events surrounding veterans and creative methods of dealing with trauma as well as produce for Veteran Art Studio on YouTube. I’m in the process of building out an online art academy in addition to other related courses, but today, we’re going to focus on transforming trauma into inspiration and I’ll be sharing with you my own experiences in how I discovered creative ways to express and process painful memories.
In this video, I cover a brief introduction to using art to transform trauma into inspiration and the difference between art therapy and artistic psychosocial rehabilitation. I’ll share with you a piece of my own journey as well as the creative process itself.
Then we’ll move into the Hero’s Journey, creatively expressing trauma and the importance of developing narratives. Finally, we’ll discuss creating while marginalized, unblocking creativity, and a bit more about how you can participate via Veteran Art Studio.
