The seventh episode of season 5 of the Expanse focuses on the Pella and Naomi Nagata’s (Dominique Tipper) story. She is being held prisoner by her ex Marco Inaros (Keon Alexander) , after trying to convince her son Filip to leave the Free Navy. Her old crewmate Cyn tries to make things right with Naomi after helping to hide her son from her years ago. When she realizes she can’t save Filip she makes a desperate space walk without a suit through hard vacuum to escape. She is able to make it to the Chetzemoka before the Pella leaves it behind, but Cyn is killed trying to stop her. Filip sees this happen and thinks his mother has committed suicide.

In episode 7 the Rocinante is still searching for the Zmeya. James Holden (Steven Strait) has a temporary crew with Bull, and Monica Stuart. They make an agreement that they will destroy the protomolecule sample if they recover it, and eventually get into a battle when the Zmeya fires several torpedoes at them. They are able to use the Roci’s PDCs to destroy the threat, and they disable the ship with their rail gun. Holden decides that he wants to board them rather than destroying them, but they self-destruct before he gets the chance. The protomolecule sample was probably sent away before the explosion as one of the torpedos looked like it was equipped with an Epstein drive.

Season 5 episode 7 doesn’t feature Amos Burton (Wes Chatham) and Clarissa Mao (Nadine Nicole), and there aren't any scenes with Drummer (Cara Gee). We see Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo) briefly as she’s talking with Alex (Cas Anvar) and Bobbie Draper (Frankie Adams) aboard the Razorback. They share the profiles of the Martian built ships that Marco is using for his Free Navy. Now Earth knows he must have a connection with Mars, and Monica thinks he might be trying to trade the protomolecule sample and Cortazar to finance the ships.
