PREVIEW: At 15:00 IST on Thursday (February 18), the player auction for the 2021 season of the IPL will commence at the ITC Grand Chola Hotel in Chennai.

In an ideal scenario, this auction would have been the first of a new three-year cycle and would have been a two-day affair with teams undergoing a major overhaul.

This will remain a 'mini' auction with just 292 players (164 Indian, 125 overseas and 3 Associate) going under the hammer as the eight teams look to tweak or top-up their squads in a bid to find the winning core before the next big auction.

As was the case last season, each team can have upto 25 players in their squad with no more than 8 overseas players. The value of the roster cannot exceed INR 85 cr.

Rajasthan Royals

New captain Sanju Samson and the Royals management have a task on their hand trying to right the wrongs of a wooden-spoon finish last season. Not only releasing Smith open up an overseas slot in the playing XI, they can look to address balance in both the batting and bowling departments.

Frontloading with another power-hitter like Alex Hales, Dawid Malan, Jason Roy or even the exciting Finn Allen is an option but all of them are likely to have lots of spin thrown at them in the IPL. Alternatively, CSK can pursue Glenn Maxwell or Moeen Ali as their final overseas option and find a space for them in the top-four.

The Knight Riders have a few little issues to address while praying for a healthy season for Andre Russell. However, there is a small problem in that they have the joint-lowest purse for this auction and will need to be very specific and smart with their picks.

That RCB have opted for a major shake-up in the last year of their cycle and despite coming off a Playoffs finish is a reflection of how some of their old problems have far overstepped the hospitality accorded to them.

Despite their strong core of Indian top-order batsmen, DC struggled with their opening combinations with Shaw and Rahane unable to find their mojo. That meant Marcus Stoinis moved up the order. If Stoinis remains as opener, Delhi will need a back-up finisher.
