Fallen City Brawl - Sgt. Clay 1CC (Hard Mode / 174,868,370 pts)

Fallen City Brawl is a new beat 'em up from Fallen City Studio (a solo developer?), and publisher Eastasiasoft. It's very much an indie game, so don't expect it to have the budget or polish of the heavy hitters like Streets of Rage or TMNT, but despite that, it's a very fun game. The combat is more combo oriented than most classic beat 'em ups, allowing you to juggle enemies with multiple attack strings, special attacks, and wall bounces. Every hit builds up your combo count, which as it increases, causes enemies to drop crystals and coins more frequently. Once you collect enough crystals, you can use your super, which has three levels to it. The first one just sends out a quick, powerful attack, while the second brings out a heavier attack (with a police car, which reminds me of Streets of Rage 1) and gives you a 3x score multiplier. Your level 3 super is where the real fun begins, though. Using that spawns 4 shadow enemies. Why would you want to use that? Because it also gives you a 5x score multiplier, and the more you build up your combo, the higher you can score. So calling in as many additional enemies as you can is essential for high scoring runs. And the most interesting thing about that is how you start getting an absolutely insane amount of score items once you hit the combo hit counter cap of 399. So the goal is to max it out as fast as you can, and then maintain your chain for the entire stage, even through the boss fights, if you can. It's super fun to try and maximize, and it's satisfying to see your score skyrocketing after building your way up to that 399 hit cap.

If you just want to play purely for a survival clear, this game is very easy - it's possibly the easiest beat 'em up I've ever played, to be honest. Even scoring isn't that difficult, especially once your hit count is in the triple digits. Enemies will drop more and more red coins as your combo increases, and picking up red coins heal you (in addition to giving score). Once you hit that 399 hit count, it's going to be hard to die, because there's always going to be a flood of coins all over the screen. With that said, this run still had several mistakes in it, with chains lost from the combo timing out or just straight up dying, so it's not *that* easy to maximize. I'd like to do a run where I fully chain every stage in the game and see how high I can score, because it can definitely go waaaaay further than this.

I can't really say how much everybody will like this game, because it might just come down to how fun going for high scores is for you. There's definitely some jank, and the hitboxes and hurtboxes are pretty questionable in a few places. But I'm enjoying it a lot, so if you're like me, it's well worth the $14.99 it's going for on Steam (there's a 10% launch discount until August 26th, bringing it down to $13.49). There's also a demo, if you'd like to try it out for yourself first. Give it a shot!

The soundtrack is pretty damn good too, it must be said.
