Use The Gift Horse Theory of Creativity | How To Write Funny
In an interview with Tim Ferris, Jerry Seinfeld likened creativity to someone giving you a horse. You either learn to ride it or it kills you.
It’s a good analogy. But how do you learn to ride this wild gift horse before it kills you?
Jerry rode it by writing a joke every day, and his gift horse galloped him to a dream career as a stand-up comedian. It only took him a few years.
The best way to ride the gift horse is to put it in a fence. Impose constraints on your creativity.
One constraint is structure: forcing yourself to write in only one medium (stand-up jokes) imposes parameters like length, format, and style. Creativity needs structure. Without it, it runs loose.
Another constraint is deadlines: forcing yourself to write every day for a certain period of time, making agreements to submit your writing to someone else, or otherwise imposing strict accountability. Creativity needs deadlines. Without it, it runs loose.
Are you training your gift horse properly? Or are you letting it live in your house, eat all your food, and trample your ceramic figurines?
You have to break in that horse. What’s your structure, and what’s your deadline?
