Underwater encounters with wild dolphins in Mazatlan, Mexico | Onca Explorations | #ExploreforLife!

The coastal waters off Mazatlán are a truly cetacean paradise. Over 18 species of cetaceans have been recorded by the crew at Onca Explorations over the last 10 years and most of them are dolphins. Our citizen science expeditions are designed to perform the monitoring of cetacean species by the systematic collection of data and Photoidentification records. We aim to better understand the ecology of species at least 3 species that are present year-round: bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus); spotted dolphins (Stella attenuata), Spinner dolphins (Stella longirostris). Apart from collecting sighting information on these species, we enter the water to record focal follows of the pods, being able to better describe their fundamental social units and the degree of response to our presence in the water.

The following clip shows a few seconds of what it was probably the best underwater encounter we have had with bottlenose dolphins many years in these waters. Over a hundred dolphins were scattered in subgroups across a 5 mile radius between 15 and 22 miles from the shore. They seemed to stationed in the area as we found them everyday moving though the area during a week long survey.

Everyday in the blue is different and the waters off Mazatlan are for sure a dolphin heaven!
