Measurement with vernier calliper..
Have you ever tried to measure something with a standard ruler, but realized it just wasn't precise enough? Whether you're working on a DIY engineering project, in a science lab, or just curious about how things are built, there’s a gap between 'close enough' and 'perfect.' Today, we’re bridging that gap by mastering the Vernier Caliper—the essential tool for taking high-precision measurements that a regular ruler simply can't handle.
Now lets with the definition of vernier calliper.
It is a device which can accurately measure small lengths upto zero point zero one centimeter.
This minimum small length which can be acceurately measure by vernier calliper is known as least count or vernier constant
Which is usually equal to zero point zero one centimeter.
Now lets study how measurement can be taken with vernier calliper.
But before measurement you have to check ther vernier calliper for zero error.
The method for checking the zero error is that
close the jaws of the callipers, the zero of the vernier scale may or may not coincide with the zero of the main scale. If their zero does not coincide, there is zero error in the instrument.
The zero error has two types.
No 1.
POSITIVE ZERO ERROR.
When the zero of the vernier scale remains right to the zero of the main scale, such error is called positive zero error.
No 2.
NEGATIVE ZERO ERROR: When the zero of the vernier scale is left of the zero of the main scale, such error is called negative zero error.
Now.
HOW TO FIND ZERO ERROR.
Bring the jaws of vernier calliper towards each other so that they touch each other. Now note the division of vernier scale which exactly coincides with any division of the main scale. Note it as “n” and multiply it with the least count.
Now for ZERO CORRECTION.
If the error is positive this value (n×L.C) is subtracted from the actual reading. If the error is negative, the value is added to the actual reading.
After checking for zero error now lets start for the measurement WITH VERNIER CALLIPERS .
Suppose we want to measure the diameter of a small solid cylinder with the vernier calipers, we will use the following method;
1. First of all check the zero error of the vernier callipers.
2. Now place the object between the jaws of vernier calipers and tight them.
3. Now note the reading on main scale. Let this reading be represented by “x”.
4. Now note a division on the vernier scale which coincides with any division of main scale. Now multiply this division of vernier scale with least count. Let this reading be “y”. 5. Now add “x” and “y” (x+y) which is measurement of the given object.
6. In case of zero error, add negative error with (x+y) and in case of positive error subtract the error from (x+y). i.e Accurate Measurement= (x+y)± zero error.
Now in Vernier caliper stands as a fundamental instrument in the field of metrology, bridging the gap between coarse measurements and high-precision engineering. By utilizing the Vernier principle—the clever alignment of two graduated scales—it allows us to surpass the limitations of a standard ruler, achieving a resolution as fine as 0.01 cm.
