Using Recycled Silk can Help Combat Pollution in Waterways

Researchers from Cornell University recently investigated the use of silk textiles to combat waterway pollution. Various pollutants, including oils and dyes, continuously pollute waterways such as rivers, canals, and oceans. The pharmaceutical and textile industries commonly discard these byproducts into waterways, endangering ecosystems.

Traditionally polluted waterways are treated using complicated and expensive methods, including in situ burning, use of chemical dispersants, chemical solidification, and biological methods. However, these methods, along with being expensive, can also cause secondary pollution. The researchers exposed silk textiles to Methyl Blue dye and oils and analysed their absorbance properties using Ultraviolet spectroscopy. The study recently published in Open Access journal Fibers hoped to provide alternative methods and materials that can be used to combat pollution in waterways.
