The Ether Tells Stories | Advanced tutorial for Soma Labs Ether V2

Soma has extended the Tutorial Competition until September 15. The idea is to create a unique and original tutorial for any Soma device. After September 15 the voting begins and the winner gets the Cosmos. You'd need to mobilize your own social network to vote, so it's not really fair. It sounds a bit like a Russian election. Since I already have a 'Cosmos', I am not competing. However, I made my first Ether video 3 years ago and haven't touched it ever since. Not good. It was too much trouble taking it out with a field recorder, hoping to find a device that would buzz and tick or maybe receive a pirate radio station. It was not for me. I started this video as a joke (sorry) because Ether doesn't need a tutorial. It was supposed to be a bit ironic, making it look much more valuable than it really is.

This is more like a tutorial for myself, a 'learn as you go' and 'what's with all the stuff you bought and never use'. It wasn't easy to commit to hours of terrible noise, hiss, buzz and high pitched frequencies. I ended up with severe headache when the video was done. The most important lession from this tutorial is to slow down your recordings. Bring it back to something we can relate to like the wind and the ocean waves. We can't figure out whatr's on a 1 Gigabit Ethernet cable unless we run it through a computer and make it audible, readable or visible.

It's not just Ether. It's all Soma gear. For me the reason is simple. I have a modular channel so my focus is on Eurorack. If I'd like to play Enner or Lyra, I need to make room, hoping to find the adapters to power it, and look up old jack cables to hear anything. And then... I need to check the manuals again because I never developed any muscle memory. I never extended my creative vocabulary. So they often speak Russian to me and I don't understand any of it. But I truly love these machines, especially Terra.

Hooking it up with the modular opened up a Multiverse of designer noise. There's always new ground to cover and always something to learn. I'll post a message when the voting starts and I am looking forward seeing what the community came up with!
