There Are Actually 8 Continents | We Just Found the Missing One | Zealandia

Every map you've ever seen is wrong.

There isn't a seventh continent hiding in Antarctica or a tiny reef somewhere in the Pacific. The missing continent is enormous, nearly two million square miles. Larger than India. About half the size of Australia.

And 94% of it is sitting at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

This is Zealandia. The hidden eighth continent that humanity somehow missed for centuries, officially confirmed by geologists only in 2017, and only fully mapped in 2023.

New Zealand isn't an island nation. It's the exposed mountain peaks of a sunken continent that broke off from Gondwana 85 million years ago, was stretched so thin by tectonic forces that it lost its buoyancy, and slowly, silently sank beneath the waves, taking its rainforests, its valleys, and its ecosystems with it.

Fishermen sail over it every day, completely unaware. Scientists have drilled core samples from its seafloor and pulled up pollen from ancient land plants. The rock beneath the Pacific isn't ocean crust, it's continental granite and schist, perfectly preserved in the freezing dark.

The world has eight continents. It always did. We just weren't looking hard enough.
