How To Tear Down a 318 Engine + How a V8 Works - For the DIY Beginner
A How-To guide that covers a tear down of a 318 SB engine and how a V8 works, aimed at the DIY Mechanic.
Part 2 of the 318 Overhaul for the '88 Dodge RamCharger features a tear down of the engine. Whether a big block or small block, V8 engines are all generally the same, so this 318 is used as a demo. We start with tools and end with an empty block. The second half of the video features a quick tutorial explaining how a V8 engine works by using the major components to show the 4 main stages of an internal combustion engine (suck, squeeze, bang, blow).
Timestamps:
00:08 - Intro;
00:30 - tools (other than a regular socket set);
01:10 - quick cleaning;
01:33 - removing accessories;
02:10 - exhaust manifolds;
02:25 - fan and pulleys;
02:43 - water pump and spark plugs;
03:00 - valve covers;
03:15 - intake manifold;
03:49 - valve train and cylinder blocks;
04:54 - lifters;
05:24 - harmonic balancer;
05:44 - timing cover and cam shaft;
06:17 - oil pan and oil pump;
06:45 - pistons;
07:24 - main bearing caps and crank shaft
07:50 - dip-stick tube; and
08:06 - how a V8 works.
The major components (like the cylinder heads) will be disassembled on the work bench in the next part. Along with that, Part 3 will feature going through all the engine parts and determining what parts we are keeping (and why) along with what parts are going to be replaced. With that, the reasons for replacement will be discussed, along with how to find them without breaking the bank.
