Boney M bezong de levenswandel van Grigori Raspoetin ('Ra ra Rasputin') in het kort, bijvoorbeeld als geliefde van de Russische tsarina (Alaxandra Fjodorovna). Onder meer werd gezongen over zijn levenseinde (vermoord). De persoon Raspoetin was ook in de zeventiger jaren niet onomstreden. Zo werd Rasputin op de Russische persing van het album verwijderd en werd Boney M verzocht het nummer niet te zingen tijdens optredens in Polen (hetgeen werd geweigerd).

Binnen de oplage van de single met B-kant Never change lovers in the middle of the night ging iets mis. De b-kant vermeldde in sommige gevallen de artiest niet. Deze rariteit kwam er niet in de Benelux en Duitsland, want daar werd Painter man de B-kant. Painter man was origineel van The Creation, een lied over een afgestudeerde kunstschilder die niet aan bak komt en allerlei minderwaardige baantjes moet accepteren

"Rasputin" is a 1978 euro disco hit single by the Germany-based pop and euro disco group Boney M., the second from their album Nightflight to Venus. With a tune resembling the second half of the Turkish folk song "Kâtibim", it is a semi-biographical song about Grigori Rasputin, a friend and advisor of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and his family during the early 20th century. The song variously sensationalizes Rasputin as a playboy, mystical healer, and political manipulator.
