In this OSCE PASS demonstration we take you through the steps needed to insert a nasogastric tube. Most medical schools will have mannequins so you guys can practice and try not to do it on each other...its really not that pleasant! NG tubes are inserted in the hospital by doctors or nursing staff to help with feeding patients e.g fine bore ng, or for drainage of stomach content e.g Ryles.

For checking the placement of the NG tube we have left it to yourselves to check your local guidelines. The usual guidance is to drain for stomach content to check the pH and do a chest xray to ensure correct placement.

Please check local guidelines or discuss with senior clinician/teacher. Do not perform any examination or procedure on patients based purely upon the information given in these videos.
