Octane Ratings Explained in 60 Seconds (87 vs 91 vs 93 vs E85/Ethanol)

Ever wonder what 87, 91, 93, or even E85 really mean at the gas pump? ⛽️

Octane ratings aren’t random numbers — they measure how resistant fuel is to knock (when fuel explodes unevenly in the engine). Knock can destroy parts, which is why higher-octane fuels are used in high-compression or turbocharged engines.

87 octane → great for daily cars and low-compression engines.
91–93 octane → needed for turbo builds and high-performance engines.
Race gas (97–100+) → built for extreme boost and tuned engines.
E85 ethanol (~105 octane) → loved by tuners, but you’ll need a flex-fuel kit or tune to run it properly.

Here’s the truth: Octane doesn’t add horsepower by itself. It only unlocks more power if your engine is tuned or built for it.
