Love To Love You Baby - Donna Summer ( Video Mix - 2021 )

"Love to Love You Baby" is a song by singer/songwriter Donna Summer from her second studio album Love to Love You Baby (1976). Produced by Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, the song was first released as a single in the Netherlands in 1975 and then released worldwide later that year.

In an interview with NPR's Fresh Air, Summer remembered coming up with the hook that inspired this song: 'I had this idea...Giorgio do you think you could write something with it? And I sort of sang it to him, and he kept saying it over, he says love to love you, I love to love you. He kept rubbing his chin and thinking like a little mad scientist, and then he went into the studio, and Giorgio had produced this great track" - Summer.

A tape of the song was sent to Casablanca Records president Neil Bogart in the U.S. in 1975 and he played it at a party at his home. Impressed with the track, Bogart continued to play it over and over all night long. His listeners couldn't get enough. He later contacted Moroder and suggested that he make the track longer - about 17 minutes. Summer again had reservations. She was not sure of all of the suggestive lyrics. Nevertheless, she imagined herself as an actress (namely Marilyn Monroe) playing the part of someone in sexual ecstasy. The studio lights were dimmed so that Summer was more or less in complete darkness as she lay on the floor.

The song became an international dance/club smash. In the U.S. it became Summer's first Top 10 hit, spending two weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on Feb 14, 1976. It was held off the number one spot by Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" and logged four weeks atop the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart, as well number three on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

As a result of the success of the song, Summer would be named "The First Lady Of Love" which labeled her with a sexually oriented fantasy image from which she would struggle to free herself. "I would not have chosen that specific song to open my career with. But I accept that's what happened. It helped get me where I am. And any many ways I'm grateful. I tried my best to parlay the success of that record into something else and get away from that imagery as soon as I could" - Summer. The singer stopped performing the song in concert for awhile in the 80s and early 90s. However, she reintroduced the song into her concert repertoire some years later with an air of nostalgia and gratitude.

The song has been sampled on many occasions. Beyoncé sampled the refrain of the song for her hit "Naughty Girl" on her album Dangerously in Love. She would later interpolate more elements of the original version in live performances, such as in the Mrs. Carter Show World Tour. Also singer Kylie Minogue performed the song as a medley with "Slow" on her live stream concert 'Infinite Disco' released in 2021.
