US–Africa Week Ahead Largest-Ever War Games, Tariff Talks, and Congo Coup Prosecutions

This week marks a significant milestone for US Africa Command (AFRICOM) with the kickoff of African Lion, a large-scale annual joint exercise involving 10,000+ troops and spanning multiple theaters—land, air, maritime, space, and cyber. Though hosted first in Tunisia, subsequent operations will occur in Ghana, Senegal, and Morocco. At the same time, there’s intense political scrutiny in Washington over Tunisia’s democratic backsliding under President Kais Saied, with US lawmakers, such as Congressman Joe Wilson of South Carolina, planning legislation to suspend aid until constitutional governance is restored.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration may reorganize or merge AFRICOM with USEUCOM, a reflection of shifting priorities and the partial dismantlement of USAID. Lawmakers on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, notably Senator Jim Risch, are advancing bills that could add conditions to US assistance. Further complicating the US–Africa agenda are new developments in US tariff discussions with African trading partners, and a recently exposed plot in the Congo—where alleged coup plotters face prosecution in American courts. #shorts
