Jorge Masvidal (born November 12, 1984) is an American mixed martial artist competing in the UFC's welterweight division.[3] A professional since 2003, he has also competed for Bellator, Strikeforce, Shark Fights, and World Victory Road.[4] He holds the record for the fastest knockout in UFC history, at 5 seconds.[5] As of January 27, 2020, he is #3 in the UFC welterweight rankings.[6]
Masvidal was born and raised in Miami, to a Cuban father and Peruvian mother. According to Masvidal, his father left Cuba in a self-made raft when he was young, ending up at Virgin Islands.[7] Masvidal's father was later imprisoned for more than twenty years for manslaughter and drug trafficking.[7] Masvidal was often involved in street fighting from a young age. There are recorded videos of his fights on YouTube defeating Kimbo Slice's protégé "Ray."[8] Masvidal later competed in wrestling at St. Brendan High School, but failed to stay eligible because of his grades, and then began training in mixed martial arts.[9]
After a 16-month layoff, Masvidal faced Darren Till on March 16, 2019, in the main event at UFC Fight Night 147.[64] Although dropped in the first round, he went on to win the fight via knockout in the second round.[65] The win also earned Masvidal his second Fight of the Night and third Performance of the Night bonus awards.[66]
Masvidal faced Ben Askren on July 6, 2019 at UFC 239.[67] He won the fight via a flying knee 5 seconds into the first round. The knockout was the fastest knockout in UFC history, breaking the record set by Duane Ludwig.[68] This win earned him the Performance of the Night award,[69] and it earned him the 2019 Knockout of the Year by multiple MMA media outlets.[70][71][72]
Masvidal faced Nate Diaz on November 2, 2019 in the main event at UFC 244.[73] In a unique situation, UFC President Dana White confirmed that the headlining bout was for a celebratory "baddest motherfucker" (‘BMF’) belt.[74] Masvidal won the fight via technical knockout via doctor stoppage between rounds three and four when the cageside physician determined a cut over Diaz's right eye rendered him unable to continue.[75] While the decision was controversial among fight fans, Brian Suttere, a Mayo Clinic-affiliated physician, stated that he agreed with the decision.[76]
In 2020, Masvidal launched a mezcal brand, El Recuerdo de Oaxaca Joven, through a partnership with Recuerdo Mezcal.[77]
