Should You Buy An All-Terrain Or Mud-Terrain Tire? | Harry Situations

Mud-Terrain tires like the Nitto Trail Grappler are incredibly popular, even on vehicles that never leave the pavement. We get it… these tires look bad ass! They have huge lugs and voids that are designed to clean out mud and side lug blocks that provide additional biting edges in deep mud and snow. Mud-Terrain tires make some sacrifices though for those aggressive looks and off-road performance. They are heavier and louder than comparable All-Terrain tires like the Nitto Terra Grappler G2, and those big lugs aren’t nearly as efficient in the rain and ice as they are in mud. So, should your next set of tires be Terra Grappler G2s or Trail Grapplers? We put both tires through their paces in a variety of different terrain in order to help you make an educated decision.

Dry Pavement- Both the Nitto Trail Grappler and the Nitto Terra Grappler G2 have excellent road manners on dry roads. The Trail Grappler is noticeably louder and 37-inch Trail Grapplers are also ten pounds heavier than a 37-inch Terra Grappler G2, leading to slightly slower acceleration and longer stopping distances.

Wet Pavement- The difference in handling and particularly stopping distances was more obvious on wet pavement than on dry pavement, with the Nitto Terra Grappler G2 responding in a predictable and controllable manner and the Nitto Trail Grappler more prone to hydroplaning due to less siping.

Icy Roads- Select sizes of the Terra Grappler G2 come with a Three Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMS) rating. This designation indicates the tire meets federal performance criteria in snow testing to be considered severe snow service-rated. There is no equivalent in a mud-terrain tire, as the lugs are too large and don’t have enough siping to allow melting ice a pathway to exit the tread.

Dirt Roads- Handling was comparable between the two tires on dirt roads, however the 21/32nds of an inch tread depth of the Nitto Trail Grapplers gave them better bite than the 16/32nds of the Nitto Terra Grappler G2. The smaller tread blocks of the Terra Grapplers did provide more predictable handling when sliding through corners.

Rockcrawling- Results varied in the rocks, with the Terra Grappler G2s working surprisingly well on sandstone and granite but falling behind the Trail Grapplers on loose, jagged rocks. If you spend the bulk of your time rockcrawling in places like Moab and Sand Hollow you will not be disappointed in running Terra Grappler G2s.

Sand- Our Jeep Wrangler has the factory 4.0L engine, which isn’t exactly a powerhouse. The Nitto Terra Grappler G2 tires provided better floatation than the Nitto Trail Grapplers at comparable air pressure (12 psi). If we had more horsepower though the Trail Grapplers would have the advantage, with performance similar to paddle tires.

Mud- We think you already know the answer to this one. The Trail Grappler cleaned out the lugs, allowing the Jeep to continue forward progress. The Terra Grappler G2s gummed up and left spinning our wheels. IF you spend the majority of the time in mud, Nitto’s Mud Grappler is an even more aggressive choice for maximum traction.

Still can’t decide? Don’t sleep on the Nitto Ridge Grappler and the Exo Grappler, which fit between the Terra Grappler G2 and the Trail Grappler in Nitto’s tire lineup.
