They face numerous obstacles, including a scheming slave trader, a jealous Pasha, and treacherous encounters at sea.

The original choreography for LE CORSAIRE was created by Joseph Mazilier. Since its premiere, the ballet has been re-staged by numerous choreographers, each adding its own touches and variations to the choreography. One of the choreographers who has worked on LE CORSAIRE is renowned ballet master Marius Petipa. He initially choreographed LE CORSAIRE in 1856 for the Ballet of the Theatre Imperial de l'Opera in Paris.

However, subsequent productions and revisions of the Ballet have featured other music by other composers, including Cesare Pugni, Leo Delibes, and Riccardo Drigo.
