Elton John - Shine On Through (1978) With Lyrics!

The first track on Elton John's 1978 album "A Single Man." On this album he did not work with his longtime songwriting partner Bernie Taupin. Instead he wrote with lyricist Gary Osborne. The method here was very different than it was with Taupin, which was lyrics first then Elton adding music. On this album Elton began the songs, usually writing a fair amount of lyrics himself, and then Osborne would finish off the song with complete lyrics. Gary Osborne also sang backup on the album.

This track "Shine On Through" had an interesting history. Elton wrote the music of this song first, during the "Blue Moves" sessions, but Bernie Taupin was unable to write a lyric, and so the song waited until Gary Osborne was able to complete it. It was then recorded for the Thom Bell Sessions in 1977, but this recording was not released until 1989 on "The Complete Thom Bell Sessions," remixed by Elton and Clive Franks. The song actually first saw the light of day at a performance at Wembley Stadium in 1977. The song was re-recorded and then released on "A Single Man" in 1978.
