"El Maestro" Cordero: Breaking the Chains of Ignorance
This is a documentary about Rafael Cordero, the father of public education in Puerto Rico.It highlights how he broke barriers in education at a time where there were few educational opportunities in the island in the 19th century. We were planning on participating in the National History Day Contest, but due to the global pandemic, we will not be able to do so. Nevertheless, here is the product of the hard research work that my students did for the past eight months in the Research Skills class. They are Luan Hernández, Kristofer Figueroa, Alejandra Medina Borges, Kevin Rivera, and Yadiel Rojas. We would like to give special thanks to the following people who contributed to the completion of this project in one way or another, Amarilys Díaz, Gloria Chinea, Myriam Miranda, Gerardo Hernández Aponte, Ph.D., Catholic Archives, Andrés Rodríguez Rubio, Ph.D., El Círculo Maestro Rafael Cordero, Javier Almeyda, José Lázaro Library, University of Puerto Rico, Yolanda Prosper, Casa Contrafuertes, Charles Juhasz Alvarado, Ana Rosa Rivera, Jorge Medina, Dr. Thomas Whittle, Terrie Oatman, and Yvonne Sanders.I would also like to thank teachers from Antilles High School who have always been supportive of our NHD program in our school, Diana Mejías, Cecile Vélez, and Laurie Donohoe.
