60 Minutes: A whale tale (2017)

Growing to eight metres, dwarf minke whales might be incongruously named but there is no doubt about their magnificence. They are also rather elusive mammals, except for once a year when they gather at a remote spot off the coast of Far North Queensland for the mating season. And remarkably, it seems that having a whale of a time with each other lessens their inhibitions and arouses their curiosity about humans. For marine biologists, this spectacular show of whale friendliness is an incredible opportunity to learn more about these beautiful creatures; animals we didn’t even know existed until just a few decades ago.
