Playing games to change the world | James Pita | TEDxManhattanBeach

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Everyone knows games are fun but they don't have to be just for play. Game Theorist James Pita transformed his life-long passion for playing games into a game changing career, fighting real-world bad guys including college campus, airport and transportation threats, poachers, and financial breaches of security. Using artificial intelligence, game theory, and today's computing power, James is changing the odds and winning.

Like many other people who grew up playing games, James Pita can still hear his parents lamenting, “You’re going to waste that beautiful mind of yours playing games all the time!” No matter how many times they commented though, he just couldn’t keep himself away. As he got older, the games became more complex, his ability to reason strategically increased, and his passion to understand the intricacies of every unique game grew… but the world around him continued to pressure him to find a real career.

Nonetheless, James found a way to evolve his love of game playing into an unlikely career. Today he’s still doing what he’s always loved most: playing games, except the games don’t end with saving a princess or taking home a big prize. Instead, they help save lives, prevent the extinction of endangered species, and help make the world a safer place.

The “Game Changer” he most admires is Nikola Tesla, because his research helped lay the foundation for many of the advances we take for granted today.

James’s favorite TED talk: “Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are” by Amy Cuddy

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
