Jazz Dance in Russia at Boris Eifman Dance Academy with Bob Boross

I was fortunate on two occasions to be a guest jazz dance teaching artist at the Boris Eifman Dance Academy in St Petersburg, Russia - 2016 and 2017. The Academy is the official school of the Boris Eifman Ballet Company, a contemporary ballet company that tours throughout the world.

The Academy is organized in the typical Russian dance school style - students are selected to train in dance - they live at the school in dormitories and have their academic classes all in one location. For this particular school, the students selected are required to be from some level of disadvantaged background - single parent family, large number of children, financial hardship, etc. In this way children are given an opportunity to learn a valuable skill and job prospect in Russia - to be a professional dancer.

The students study primarily in ballet, but also in acrobatic stretching, social dance, etc. I was the first American teacher to come to Eifman and provide training in jazz dance. Jazz dance has been identified by the company directors as a necessary technique/style in the training of a well rounded contemporary dancer.
