Tracing the origin of the Ebola outbreak

More than a month after an Ebola outbreak was detected in the Democratic Republic of Congo and later spread to neighboring Uganda, health officials are still working to identify the source of the virus. Investigators believe the disease had been circulating undetected for weeks before a cluster of severe illnesses triggered alarm. Authorities are now investigating several earlier deaths, including a funeral in eastern Ituri Province, to determine whether they could be linked to the first known case.
