Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame: A Musical Adventure - Feb. 1999 - Disney-MGM Studios

Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame - A Musical Adventure was my favorite stage show on Disney property. This musical was based off the movie The Hunchback of Notre Dame and most of the songs are in there, except Hellfire and The Court of Miracles. This show opened on June 21, 1996, replacing the Spirit of Pocahontas show at the Backlot Theater, located to the side of New York Street. A runway went up the center of the theater for the actors to perform, with benches on the sides. Bleacher seating was in the back. Most Topsy Turvy Days (Jan. 6) I would go see this show and a large banner on the theater said “Happy Topsy Turvy Day!” Before the show, different entertainment acts performed, but the one I saw the most, my favorite, was Matt the Juggler, who was quick witted and performed 8,000 shows at Disney (according to his website). The last day of Hunchback was September 28, 2002, and I was there on that day. After the show left, the theater was abandoned for many years and then they started doing the Frozen sing-along there, which then moved to the bigger American Idol theater. The Backlot theater was demolished for Galaxy’s Edge. The Rise of Resistance building is about in that spot today.

In this show you will see/hear...
“The Bells of Notre Dame'' The opening story sung by the amazing Clopin about how Quasimodo came to live at Notre Dame Cathedral under Frollo. Amazing puppetry is used in some parts to help tell the story.
Quasimodo talks to the church gargoyles about going to the Festival of Fools, the old FoF.
“Out There” Quasimodo sings of being out there in the streets of 15th-century Paris.
“Topsy Turvy'' Clopin sings this song. This is a big celebration with confetti falling from the sky and the people of Paris choosing a King of Fools, which Quasimodo wins, since he's the ugliest.
Quasimodo’s victory turns to mockery and Esmeralda saves Quasimodo against Frollo’s wishes. Frollo tells the captain of the guard, Phoebus (it means Sun God), to arrest Esmeralda. Esmeralda hides in the church, and meets/fights Phoebus.
“God Help the Outcasts'' Esmeralda sings this song about God helping her people.
Esmeralda finds Quasimodo’s place up in the bell tower and Quasimodo helps her escape.
“Heaven’s Light” Quasimodo sings this song about not being able to find love.
Frollo looks for Esmeralda, who has escaped, and he burns Paris.
“A Guy Like You” the funny gargoyles, Victor, Hugo, and Laverne sing this song about how loveable Quasimodo is.
Esmeralda brings Phoebus into the church and they kiss.
“Heaven’s Light (reprise)” Quasimodo sings this again, realizing he is not going to get the girl. He tears up a playing card he got during “A Guy Like You” and throws it on the ground. I kept one of the pieces after a show once, ha-ha!
Frollo plans to attack the Court of Miracles where the gypsies live and Quasimodo warns them, Frollo follows Quasimodo and captures everyone, Quasimodo escapes and saves Esmeralda, Frollo is thrown off the cathedral. Many dazzling effects in this part.
“The Bells of Notre Dame (reprise)” Clopin finishes off the tale with the final lyrics of this song.
Everyone takes a bow at the end.
