Lioness escapes with tiny cubs, Mara North, Kenya

In February in Mara North Conservancy this lioness with four small cubs encountered a male lion and another lioness. Since the cubs evidently were not biologically related to the male lion, he was pursuing the mother and that often unfortunately results in the killing of the cubs so the male can eventually mate with the mother and sire his own cubs. Note that the lioness keeps looking around to see if she is followed. This lioness was able to escape the two lions (the male is pictured at the end of the movie) as several safari drivers followed her on her route and essentially hid them from view. Hopefully, the lioness was able to find permanent safety for her cubs, but raising lion cubs is not an easy task, especially when you have to leave them to get food.

Movie is deliberately muted due to trucks, talking, and other distracting noises. Male lion photo by Barry Miller.
