Scientific Explanation 1 - The Deductive-Nomological Model
It is often thought that science doesn't merely describe and predict what happens in the world, it also gives us explanations of why things happen. What is a scientific explanation? This video outlines the deductive-nomological model of explanation, proposed by Carl Hempel, which claims that to explain X is to show how X can be derived from statements of laws of nature plus initial conditions.
