Innovative food production for challenging environments - Cambodia
Live & Learn is modelling and testing innovative and integrated technology such as raised and floating food gardens as well as biodigesters to capture and treat human and animal waste and convert it to fertiliser and biogas for cooking. This is a novel and synergistic combination of sanitation and agricultural systems, supporting both health and food production outcomes.
The 'Floating Biodigester' and 'Floating Toilet' energy and sanitation projects, use composted pig and human waste outputs as fertilizer for food production. These approaches will help to build the resilience of these highly vulnerable communities to avoid malnutrition through increased food production, income generation, and disaster preparedness.
The project has built strong relationships with vulnerable communities that were previously marginalised from development interventions, key community members, particularly women, with the needed skills through producing demonstration gardens, which now provide examples and models for further communication and education of their communities. This has also empowered women to be involved in new income generation activities and improve gender equity in their communities.
Funded by Assisi, through AusAID.
