Sex and the Catholic Feminist: The Author’s Perspectives on a God-Centered "New Feminism"

Aired live Jan. 24, 2022 on Breakfast With Bacon
Feminism started out as a Christian movement, but it was hijacked along the way by men like Larry Lader and Harry Blackmun (author of Roe v. Wade). In this episode, award-winning freelance writer and speaker Sue Ellen Browder (former writer at Cosmopolitan) discusses her newest book “Sex and the Catholic Feminist.” (If you missed her 2019 interview, you'll want to listen to that as well: https://www.drchristinebacon.com/radio/how-one-former-cosmo-writer-helped-the-sexual-revolution-hijack-the-womens-movementand-now-regrets-it ) In “Sex and the Catholic Feminist,” Browder challenges the notion that you can't be a feminist and believe in God. She echoes John Paul II's call for Catholics to embody a "new feminism," a radical new view of women's dignity. Her goal in this book is to "follow one golden thread of feminism in America — the pro-life thread — to show why it has been ignored by the media and left out of public conversation for 50 years." For Browder, the pro-life movement is about more than abortion and contraception; it's about loving and respecting all human life.

While tracing the history of feminism in America, Browder discovered at the core of these various feminist movements a search for personhood. Where do women place their identity and find their fulfillment? Browder ultimately concludes that in our noisy, consumerist society, placing one's identity anywhere other than in God will prove disappointing and unfulfilling.

Browder has addressed members of the United Nations' Commission on the Status of Women and has appeared on hundreds of radio and television shows, including the Today Show, Oprah, EWTN News Nightly and Fox News. She has published hundreds of articles in many national magazines and newspapers, including Reader's Digest, Woman's Day, the National Catholic Register and Cosmopolitan. As the author of "Subverted: How I Helped the Sexual Revolution Hijack the Women's Movement" (Ignatius), Browder has spoken at many pro-life conferences around the country, including the March for Life. Her latest book, "Sex and the Catholic Feminist," explains how the "F-word" (feminism) got hijacked by pro-abortion, "sex-as-power-and pleasure" forces and why the pro-life, "sex-as-love" movement is the authentic women's movement of the 21st century.
