10 drinks in Budapest

If you plan on travelling to Budapest, you will know it's famous for its many, many bars and lively drinking culture. We set ourselves the challenge of trying 10 different Hungarian drinks. We thought it was a great way to show you the best bars in Budapest and the drinks you have to try before you leave.

We started in Szimpla Kert, Budapest's first and most famous ruin pub. It's very arty and creative inside. Even if you don't drink you should definitely pay it a visit. Our first drink was Unicum. An extremely bitter drink invented by the doctor to the Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, Joseph II.

Next we headed to upscale wine bar, Veritas Winebar where we sampled sweet wine from the Hungary's famous Tokaji wine making region.

We then made our way to Kisüzem, a hip dive-bar popular with locals and not so frequented by tourists for some local beer. Soproni was our beer of choice, a gassy lager that's also the most popular in Hungary.

At Kisüzem we also tried Pálinka, the ultimate Hungarian drink! It's a strong alcohol and similar to schnapps. Hungarian's drink lots of it and swear by it as a cure for pretty much everything. They will even drink a shot as an accompaniment to breakfast.

After that we staggered over to Kadarka Wine Bar. A trendy place popular with locals that offers a wide array of Hungarian wines at incredibly friendly prices. There we sampled various red and white Hungarian wines.

Surprised we were still able to walk, we then headed to Fröccsterasz, an outdoor drinking area popular with tourists in Deak Square. We tried two types of Fröccs, a drink similar to Spritz where soda water is mixed with wine. We tried the standard variety as well as Macifröccs which is pimped with raspberry syrup.

Nearing the end of our pub crawl we made it to Csendes Vintage Bar & Café - another cool dive bar, something Budapest does so well. We ordered some Hungarian "Törley" champagne for just 10 euros a bottle; it tasted way better than it's price tag.

Amazed to still be standing we found ourselves at another ruin bar called Mélypont Presszó where we finished ourselves off with a shot of Fény. It's a crazy drink made from carbonated vodka with a little fruit syrup and tastes incredible.
Special thanks to the awesome Budapest bars we visited:
