🏘️ Protestant Looks Into Latter-day Saint/Catholic Relations as Utah Neighbors

The relationship between Latter-day Saints and Catholics in Salt Lake City is a fascinating ride into interfaith history. While the early Latter-day Saints faced intense persecution from their neighbors, the same was happening to early Catholic immigrants in the latter-half of the 19th century.

While making a visit to Utah, I explored the Temple Square area. After hitching a ride, a few blocks down the road stood the Cathedral of the Madeleine -  the mother church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City. The cathedral had caught my eye from online pictures I had seen earlier, with the blend of architectural styles mixed with a vibrant Spanish Gothic look inside.

As a curious lifetime Protestant who visits all these different types of churches, the THREE questions that POPPED into my mind was -with how much LDS has shaped the vast majority of history and development of the state- 

*How does the Catholic Church operate as the minority in Salt Lake City, under the shadow of the Latter-day Saint worldwide headquarters? 
*How is this cathedral just blocks away from Temple Square?
*How does the interfaith relationship dynamic work between Catholics and Latter-day Saints?

I got the chance in to walk-in, look around, and witness a Vespers evening service. Afterwards, I dug into the history of how this happened. To my surprise, it was Brigham Young who played a key role in helping establish the first Catholic Church in Utah, which now is home to the Cathedral.

This hasn't been without some eyebrow-raising. One bishop ordered the interior murals to contain Bible passages that seemingly feel directed at key LDS doctrine (most notably Galatians 1:8). The most curious example of LDS-Catholic relations was a letter found in 1923 that said a poker night had been held between an LDS prophet, the Catholic bishop, and a prominent Protestant reverend - though many dispute this actually happened. Tensions grew in the 1950's-60's, however leaders from both churches extended olive branches at key moments.
