Nov. 14, 1960 - Ruby Bridges, Age 6, Integrates New Orleans School
Sixty-six years ago this week, first grader Ruby Bridges was thrust into the center of the civil rights movement. Despite New Orleans public schools having been desegregated by court order, Bridges' entrance into elementary school was met by intense protest from rioting mobs.
In this edition of Moments in Civil Rights History, a collaboration of Comcast and the Equal Justice Initiative, forceful challenges to integration don't extinguish Bridges' passion for learning and advancement.
