This Olympic 1500m final in Paris was billed in advance as a “race for the ages,” fueled by the rivalry between defending champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen from Norway and reigning world champion Josh Kerr fromGreat Britain, as former middle-distance star Sebastian Coe pointed out.

Favorite Jakob Ingebrigtsen took the lead early and was aiming for the double in the 1500m and 5000m. Kerr started his attack 250 meters from the finish but the USA’s Cole Hocker responded with an astonishingly strong final sprint, securing victory with an Olympic record time of 3:27.65.
