Repairing a Harman/Kardon Amp for One Dollar
For over 11 years i used my Harman/Kardon HK3490 as the amplifier for my desktop computer. One day it came up with an error message and it refused to play. What do you do in a case like that? Do you throw it out, and buy a new amp? I paid about $500 for this amp. With a little research you are going to find out, that H/K doesn't make amps anymore. Why is that you may ask? I don't know. Maybe it is too expensive to make them. They are heavy, good quality parts are expensive, and you can make more money by making other consumer electronics? Or is it that the audiophile people are dying out. The young people nowadays are listening to music on in ear headphones with their smart phones. There is no need for expensive huge speakers. Most of them don't even know what the word stereo means. Many of them don't have the necessary care to be able to handle fragile high end hifi units, and many of them don't have an attention span of more than 2 minutes. I was debating with a friend, if i should post this video, since i believe that not many are going to watch it. Then what is the point? I think this video will be valuable in the near future, when there are no more large amps available, and the few audiophiles left need to learn how to keep their stuff running, and how to fix it. I personally have only two Harman/Kardon amps. I have a HK990 and this HK3490, they are very valuable to me since i have them power huge speakers. Listening to them is just so much better than ear or headphones. As i was researching on how to fix my amp, i found a few videos here on YouTube. Couldn't help to notice that almost all of them were long and the people repairing them were talking a lot, and dragging along. I have to admit my repair took about 40 minutes, because i had to position the camera, and try to not be in the way while i was filming. That always slows you down to a degree. Most people can't imagine how much work goes into videos like this. At the end i decided to speed things up during editing in order to not bore people too much when watching this. I also doubt that, with the exception a very few, anybody will read the description to this video. Maybe i can give a few insights on how i went about the repair. Some technical data, or advice?
I searched on Google for HK3490 problems, found a few websites where they offer the service manual for download. You'll find out quickly that those amps have notorious problems with their power supplies. I think the more unstable your power grid is, the more problems you'll have with those amps blowing up. That's just what it is. Then i found that R952 and R951 are two 0.47Ω resistors that are there for protection, like a fuse. And when you measure the resistance with an ohm-meter you'll see that they are blown like a fuse. They are cheap parts, but it took me more than a week to get my order from an Amazon vendor, because of the corona virus that slows down everything in the moment. Replacing the resistors the right way, without butchering the PCB requires a good soldering iron and good solder. A solder suction pump was very helpful too. You can see all that in the video. Make sure your soldering iron has lots of power, because the terminals on the transformer are pretty big, and suck a lot of heat energy out of your iron. 4 years ago i made an unboxing video about a HK3770 amp, and so far it has 38K views. To me that means that there is a decent amount of people looking at this, and my time is making those videos was not wasted. You can help me by sharing this with your friends that have amps at home, or just click on one of the buttons below. I always appreciate new subscribers. Please enjoy this 4K video, and let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
