Power and Free Conveyor for Painting Valves

This unique power and free application is used for painting valves. After paint is applied the room used as a paint booth is then sealed and converted to an oven for curing. Since the paint area doubles as the oven, the motor and drive unit cannot be housed inside the oven. The drive unit is housed outside of the paint booth/oven to keep it away from the high temperature environment.

To allow for this conveying configuration, a power and free conveyor was used. The "power'" chain travels out of the oven at a switch, through the drive and take-up unit and back into the oven at the same switch. Typically, a power and free conveyor system is used for non-synchronous conveying where parts need to stop at certain points while other parts on the same line continue. However, for this application, the conveyor system was made to be synchronous or continuous inside the paint booth/oven with the powered chain moving separately through the drive which needed to reside outside of the oven.
