Cutaway #4 - Two Out - Joe Nesbitt

Video of my two out on NYE in Eloy. This was not an AAD fire. I had plenty of altitude and the cutter was intact upon inspection. There is a slow motion clip at the end that shows the reserve firing as the main is sniveling. The reserve risers pinned my head to my chest. When I got my head free I bent the GoPro mount so the video angles are kind of funky. (I'm obviously not looking behind me.)

Upon finding my head pinned I first checked my altitude and was satisfied I had time to figure out what was going on as I had time and my canopy was at least flying stable. At this point I didn't know I had two out as I couldn't see. My initial thought was my chest strap or something had snagged my camera. I eventually get my head clear and realize the reserve risers, which had two twists in them, had been pinning my head down. At this point I realized I had two canopies out. I checked my altitude again and then checked my handles. My cutaway handle was in place and seated in the velcro. My reserve handle was in place but floating and not seated. I played with both canopies for a bit testing control. My original intent was to land both. Unfortunately due to the twists in the reserve risers the canopies kept trying to fly away from one another. The risers were clear of another another and I felt there was less of a risk of entanglement from cutting away than there was from a possible down plane close to the ground. I cutaway the main, untwisted under the reserve, and had an uneventful decent under the reserve.

After inspecting the gear we're still not sure what caused it. It was borrowed gear and my second jump of the day on it. I did not check the reserve pin before this jump. It's possible it had been dislodged at some point either on the previous jump, or packing, or in the plane. It's also possible that since the reserve handle was a large ring that my suit could have swallowed/snagged it. If the reserve cable was short enough then a slight snag could have deployed it.
