Melbourne's High Capacity Metro Trains HCMT First Passenger Service
After months of testing and commissioning, Melbourne's new High Capacity Metro Trains' (or HCMT) has finally entered service! On Sunday 27th December 2020, HCMT set 11 had the honours of operating the inaugural HCMT service, operating a specially timetabled 8:31am Flinders Street service from Pakenham, then the return 9:55am service back to Pakenham. The first train was attended by officials, engineers, passengers and rail enthusiasts.
In this video we take a ride onboard the first service to Flinders Street, seeing the train arrive into Pakenham and seeing various clips throughout the journey. We also take a look at some of the new features of the trains.
Overall I was quite impressed with the new trains; they definitely feel a generation ahead of any other train in Melbourne and feature improved passenger information and accessibility. Acceleration and braking is fast and smooth, ride comfort is very good and in a rarity among modern commuter/metro trains these days; the seats are actually comfortable with good levels of padding and support. IMO they'll make a worthy addition to Melbourne's rail network
The HCMT's will be introduced onto the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines, before running on the Sunbury line in 2025 once the Metro Rail Tunnel opens. The first service was more of a test with passengers, or for publicity purposes. Majority of the fleet is still undergoing testing and commissioning and the trains are limited on the types of services they can currently operate due to various restrictions. A wider rollout of the HCMT's into regular passenger services will begin during the upcoming January 31st 2021 timetable change.
