Durga Puja in Kolkata India

Many temporary temples are built for the holidays in Calcutta, India. Durga is seen as a motherly figure and often depicted as a beautiful woman, riding on a tiger or a lion. She is shown having many arms. Each of her arms carries a weapon and she is often shown defeating demons. She is widely worshipped by the followers of the goddess-centric sect that is called Shaktism. Durga has importance in other denominations such as Vaishnavism and Shaivism.

Mother (Maa) Durga is a warrior goddess who fights against evil and demonic forces that threaten peace, harmony and prosperity.
Her devotees say her origin was to kill the demon Mahishasura. She is said to be destructive when needed and loving and nurturing when she has to be. She is the central deity in Shaktism.
